Since 1998, the BVGD has been a member of the FEG (European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations). The FEG represents around 60,000 tourist guides in Europe. It is a platform for the exchange of views and experiences on various political and social conditions that impact tourist guiding in the EU. Regular meetings set the course for close cooperation within the European single market.
The European Federation was founded in 1986 in Paris and has worked with the relevant EU bodies to develop standards for the qualification as a tourist guide (EN 15565). The FEG supports the implementation of the European standard EN 15565 in the training of qualified tourist guides. The FEG successfully campaigned in the European Standardization Commission for a clear definition of the profession “tourist guide”.

The European Federation provided a decisive boost for the foundation of the BVGD. Before the German Association was founded, guides in other countries had already formed organizations and merged these in a European federation. In Germany, only a few interest groups existed at this point, but gradually German tourist guides, too, became more and more aware of the importance of professionalism. The German National Tourist Guide Association (BVGD) was finally founded in November 1994.
The FEG logo can only be used by FEG member organizations like the BVGD and by its members – for example, local associations or individual members. You can recognize members by the logo and the words “FEG member”.
The FEG organizes European tour guide congresses every two years. Information on these events is available on the FEG website. In addition, the representatives of the member states meet twice a year at delegate meetings. The BVGD is currently represented at these meetings by Maren Richter and Christiane Brannath.
